“Smoke” as defined by Jim Brown

I'm a fireman. Where there is smoke there is fire. When there is fire, I get to kick doors in, run into burning buildings and put it out. The heat bears down, my mask steams up, I can hear the roar, and I wouldn't want to be any place else in the world at that moment. After the fire, my bunker gear smells like smoke for a while, and it smells good.

In the figurative sense I use the word more sparingly: "Dude, you smoked that thing" (smoked almost always is accompanied by "dude") and if you smoked something you must be "on fire".

Or other times, I use it to describe something that I consider hot: "Dude, did you see those (________), they were smokin'!"

And sometimes, though overly sentimental, there's this one song that reminds me of a different era in my current relationship, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, by The Platters.

"When your heart's on fire, you must realize, smoke gets in your eyes..."

Buy me a Belgian and I'll tell you more tales about smoke.

About Jim Brown

Jim Brown, by trade, is a Paramedic Lieutenant for the Olympia, Washington Fire Department; where he has worked for over 14 years. Fighting fire and saving lives is meaningful work but the bike remains a central fixture in his life. Jim found a way to bring the bike into his current profession by developing the first Bike-Medic program for The Olympia Fire Department back in 1995.

For the last seven years, Jim has devoted his time to developing the talent of young racers in the state of Washington. His team, Rad Racing NW, is the premier junior cycling team in the country. Under his coaching, he has sent junior cyclists all over the world to compete. His kids have won 20 national championship titles and have represented the United States in 13 World Championships. Attend a cyclocross race in the Northwest and you are sure to see an abundance of read and black on the podium. Jim even finds enough saddle time himself to compete in Master A's.

Jim has three daughters, 8, 3, and 1 and is married to Regina. (Regina Brown earns her royal name each year by celebrating her wedding anniversary with Jim in the mud and cold of US Cyclocross Nationals)
