“Epic” as defined by Scot Nicol
Lenny Bruce said that satire is tragedy plus time. In the parlance of cycling, insufferable torture plus time equals epic. Or perhaps torture plus amnesia equals epic. Once the wounds heal, don’t we forget the misery? An epic can be planned or unplanned. Usually they’re both miserable and sublime, but they are always worthy of a story. If you swore to yourself that you’d never do it again, consider it an epic.

About Scot Nicol
Scot Nicol is the founder of Ibis Cycles and a 1990 Mountain Bike Hall of Fame Inductee. He apprenticed under Joe Breeze and Charlie Cunningham which explains why his bikes have always been so good. Scot made a sweet custom titanium stem for Chris’ road bike a few years back and recently gave Chris’ induction speech at the 2006 Mountain Bike Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Man, was he ever nervous. Scot does not have a middle name but has been known to use the middle ring for extended periods.

Alternate Shots and Outtakes
This is a triumphant shot, the summit! But epics are never really about the result. Almost there! This shot revealed a direction we liked so much that we added a 13th month to the calendar to showcase it.
